Monogram Space Shuttle Cut-away

By Pete Malaguti

This started out as the 1/72 Monogram Space Shuttle ... but with a little scratchbuilding here and there, I've got a unique cutaway model of it. I wanted to see details like Payload Bay fuel tanks, engine plumbing, the Crew Module. I started by sketching out the areas I wanted to cut away. It was going to be a generic shuttle, but after installing the interior airlock, decided to identify this as Columbia. Real Space Models' Shuttle update set provided the KuBand antenna, RMS, payload door radiators, Payload Bay handholds and hinges, OMS and Main engine bells and some decals. I also made some of my own decals (cockpit window, flipper doors over the wing elevon hinges) and Cutting Edge belly decals were also used.

I spent about 900 hours, give or take, building this and learned a heckuva lot about both the Shuttle and building a cutaway model.
