Buck Rogers' Starfighter |

Spandex, feathered hairdos and funky music. Many shows from the 70's had those elements and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was no exception. Now those may be out of style but the one thing that I think retains its "coolness" is the Starfighter. MPC produced a model kit of the Earth Directorate's sleek defense fighter and it was a pretty decent representation of the ship. The model is now very rare to find but I was lucky to come across one at a sci-fi convention and couldn't pass on buying it. The model is a straightforward build. I used Testors acrylic colors and the paint scheme is as follows: The hull was weathered with black and dark gray pastels and sealed with Testors dull coat. Just FYI, after doing some research, I found out that the actual miniature was painted various shades of "almond". When looking at almond spray paints at the store, however, I found them to be too yellowish. I therefore decided on Camouflage gray because to me it retains a bit of an almond/off white tone. Now one detail you may notice here is that there's a pilot sitting in the cockpit. If you're familiar with this kit you no doubt remember that it didn't come with a pilot. Believe it or not, I was able to find an actual Buck Rogers pilot figure (made for this kit) on Ebay for less than 10 bucks. What are the chances? I ordered one and it arrived nicely detailed with an accurate uniform and helmet! I did have to dremel off a bit of his bottom however in order to get him to fit with the canopy closed overhead. It's a shame that this kit is so rare now because it's a fun, simple build. There are a number of inaccuracies, the worst being the cockpit, but overall it makes a nice replica. I took time to watch an episode or two recently and I can't quite say that it's aged well but I still think the Starfighter is a great looking ship. Image: Bottom Image: Top |
