This is a 1:1 scale prop.

When a friend and co-worker showed me a particular ink jet cartridge out of one of the printers in the office, we both felt that it had a very interesting shape to it. It looked remarkably like the Pulse Rifle prop in the movie “ALIENS”. At that point I was inspired ! About a month later...this is the result.

It was constructed completely out of various thickness of styrene with many of the components attached by black screws. The main handle and forward “cocking” lever were vacuum-form parts made out of patterns I had constructed out of a material called RENSHAPE. It’s easy to cut, sand and drill and can be glued together with “crazy glue”. Wonderful stuff!

The main body was painted with Krylon flat black spray and the upper section was sprayed with Ace brand “machine grey” for added contrast. Weathering was done using black oil washes and Doc O’Brien’s weathering powders. The “chips” were added using Tamiya sky grey and flat aluminum acrylics.

I had to add a “real” laser sight to the beast so I picked up a $1.99 laser pointer and a $1.99 black LED flashlight at the computer store bargain rack.

I gutted the flashlight and mounted the laser pointer inside the unit. I was able to rewire the rear on-off switch with the laser pointers wiring to make the whole thing work.

The side flashlight was another larger unit I picked up at the same store for $3.99. Both were mounted on the rifle using scratch built mounting assemblies made out of styrene. Styrene tubing was added to the two front “barrels” to extend them and give them a more realistic look.

The base is also a custom piece that finishes off the rifle nicely and also gives it a home. The plaque was designed and engraved by Gotham Engravers and mounted on a support built on the base.

The Model PS-FR (17) designation is the actual part number for the Canon ink jet cartridge used as the basis for the rifle.
