USS Lexington

By Greg Kirkman

This was my first build-up of Polar Lights' 1/1000 scale TOS Enterprise model. It was also the first model I'd built since I was a kid, and the first to not turn out looking like, well, a kid built it! I completed it in 2007.

I used this build to get a feel for the 1/1000 kit, and, as such, did not feel worthy naming it Enterprise. I decided to label it as the Lexington (from the classic episode, "The Ultimate Computer"), and used JT Graphics decals for the name, registry numbers (specifically, the "NCC-1709" designation developed by Greg Jein, which has since become canon), lower saucer triangle markings, and bridge (which can be seen underneath the clear dome).

The basecoat was Testors' Flat Gull Gray, applied with a cheapie airbrush. I gave the model rather heavy pastel chalk weathering, which helped to hide some of the flaws in the build (...like the nacelles snapping off of the pylons when I tried to fit the front outer domes on!). I also drew on the saucer's gridlines with a pencil and a compass. The stand was a simple custom job--a few brass rods and a cheap wooden plaque colored with wood stain.

All in all, this build was a fun one--it got me back into modeling, helped me try out the PL kit (and some techniques), and gave me much-needed practice for my eventual production-version Enterprise.
