U.S.S. Enterprise Study Model

By David Shaw

This is a study model built to test aspects of my 33 inch Enterprise plans. I found that when I printed the plans at two-thirds scale, I was able to make use of a number of parts from the 22 inch cutaway Enterprise kit, specifically the secondary hull (after being lengthened 3/8th of an inch), nacelle supports (after changing their attachment points to the nacelles) and nacelles (after extending back the inboard trench). I also made use of a number of DLM parts (bridge, warp engine aft end caps, warp engine front domes, final stage flux chillers, intake sink field generators, shuttle bay clam shell doors, impulse engine, main deflector dish and warp field enhancement grids). The primary hull, B/C deck structure and dorsal were scratch built based on my plans. The decals are a combination of David Frias' and Thomas Sasser's work.

The scratch built sections started out as foam core board stand-ins while I attempted to figure out how I was going to build those parts. Eventually I filled in the gaps with a paper mache pulp attempting to match the original curves of my plans. The surface was finished off with a combination of paper and Elmer's Glue, and sealed with an acrylic clear coat. The final pieces were surprisingly strong and fit nicely with the rest of the model.

Considering my lack of recent model building experience and the scope of what I was attempting, I'm pretty happy with the results. I'm sure that others with more experience could have done a better job, but this build has definitely helped in making improvements to my 33 inch Enterprise plans, which was the original goal.
