AMT A-Wing

By Adam Hurst

This is a build of the old AMT 1983 kit with the darker tint to the clear pieces. I was excited to try out using washes for weathering effects and I was very pleased with the results. I didn't have access to an airbrush for this kit so every effect that I made was either done with masking and spray cans, or with different brush techniques. The fit of the model is fairly poor at the rear of the engines and along the fuselage and so I needed to get some different materials to fill those areas, but since this was ostensibly a concept build for me to practice some weathering techniques, I didn't press myself to get materials and fill out the seams. The majority of this kit is straight from the box with the exception of two improvised bits of black tubing coming from the engines out to the fuselage near the weapons to better match the studio model.

As for paint scheme, I decided to depart from some of the typical A-wing conventions which originate with the studio model. Just as each individual X-wing and Y-wing seen in the films had its own personality and variances from the basic marking theme, I decided to retain some fundamentals, and then branch out. As a result, I put some dark weathered gold color on the nose and on the fuselage with red ''danger'' stripes.

The ''wash'' weathering was done by means of water-based craft paints mixed into water, applied over oil-based paints. The result is a very cheap, easy to manage wash which is good for practice since all you need is a wet rag to tone down the weathering or even remove it entirely.
